Business Choice Direct share the most common causes of courier insurance claims.

Courier insurance specialists Business Choice Direct (BCD) have analysed more than 4,000 courier van insurance claims to uncover the incidents most commonly affecting delivery drivers – and the findings may not be what many would expect.
While vehicle theft remains a major concern for couriers, BCD’s claims data shows that many incidents are caused by everyday, low-speed situations that are part of normal delivery work, including parked vehicle collisions, reversing incidents and rear-end accidents.
The analysis of 4,013 claims between 2023 and 2025 found that:
The findings highlight the challenges couriers face while working on busy residential streets, making frequent stops and navigating tight spaces throughout the working day.
Although theft continues to be a serious risk, BCD’s data shows that many claims come from routine delivery activities rather than high-speed collisions.
Almost one in five claims involved parked vehicles, with incidents including couriers accidentally damaging parked cars or third parties colliding with a parked courier van.
Rear-end collisions were equally common, accounting for 19% of claims. These incidents often occur in busy traffic conditions where couriers are spending long periods on the road making multiple deliveries.
Reversing incidents were another significant cause of claims, accounting for 10% of incidents. With couriers regularly manoeuvring into driveways, loading areas and tight streets, even small mistakes can result in costly repairs.
